Mrs. Miller hardly sees me when she opens the door. She waves me in with one hand, gluing the phone to her ear with the other. “I’ve tried that. I called him three times. No, that’s just what they’ve been saying. Look. I know Violet. She wouldn’t be out this long. No, there’s nobody.” She coats the phone with one hand to mute it. “There are some muffins on the table if you want lunch, Sol. Jordan’s upstairs.”

I pass on the muffins and jog up the stairs instead. Jordan is sitting on his bed, laptop open. He doesn’t look up when I appear. “Hey, Jordan, we need to talk. I might have a lead.”

Slowly his eyes slip from the screen. “A lead?” His voice is dry, expressionless.

I swallow. I didn’t expect this to feel so awkward. “There’s a rusted truck out in the woods. Tristan showed me. I think Violet is nearby.”

He nods, not terribly surprised. “Yeah, I know where it is,” he says. “Maybe I can scout it out later.”
